There are guides, and they do work (but the one(s) I found did a terrible job of teaching you why they work). I could rant more, but that's probably not helpful. The mechanics are both complex and opaque, the UI is a tedious nightmare, and the (full) scripting APIs are locked behind either two, $50b upgrades or SF3.3. Personally, I'm mostly interested in the home RAM upgrade from 9.2.īN3 (probably want to rush 3.3): Corporations are undeniably powerful, but they've also been the cause of my least-fun experience with this game. I'm still working through 9.1, and they don't really seem particularly strong on their own, but most of the hash upgrades boost other mechanics (notably, corps and bladeburner). 3 I hear is good): Hacknet Servers replace the boring, passive money generating Hacknet Nodes with a new. It's not scriptable (without SF7), but there's limited-but-mostly-sufficient automation available. I liked the the novelty of it, but it felt strange to be ignoring the rest of the game. On advice from the discord, I ignored money, factions, and installing augs in 6.1 and still beat the node in ~3-3.5 days. (maybe?) BN6 (6.1 is fine): Bladeburners is. The good shit here (IMO) is permanent access to the formulas API without needing to shell out $$$ for the exe. (Side note: many singularity functions grant Int XP, though usually only in very small amounts.) You also get access to getBitNodeMultipliers(), which tells you how the node you're in differs from BN1 in exact, numeric terms can useful for deciding what strategies to use/avoid. Intelligence takes a while to get good, but, like SourceFiles, it never resets, so that's nice. (maybe 2? maybe skip?) BN5 (5.1 is fine): This is mostly BN1, but slower (but not as much slower as BN4). (I highly recommend setting this up very early, as BN4 is extremely slow-going with hacking alone.) Of particular note, it lets you fully automate committing crime, which makes using gangs outside of BN2 actually viable without an autoclicker (or exploits). Which leads nicely to.īN4 (some docs are outdated: 4.1 gives full access, but at 16x RAM cost, 4.2 drops this to 4x, and 4.3 to 1x this cost multiplier only applies outside of BN4, within the node, you effectively have 4.3 at all times): The singularity API fills in pretty much all the gaps you need for full automation: joining/working for factions, buying TOR/programs, buying/installing augments, etc. The main thing keeping them in check is the crazy negative karma (-54k) required to use them elsewhere. but a common recommendation is to leave 1.3 for later if you're itching for something new.Īs for what "new" to try, I'd recommend, in rough order:īN2 (2.1 is fine, more is of very dubious use): Gangs are pretty strong, and not too hard to script once you understand them. It is great! I would take breaks from work to code in this game, because it was more fun.IMO you can't go wrong just maxing 1 before moving on. LOL! You can play like a full blown software professional or just hack your way through. You can code a complete mess or you can build full a project with imported library files to help stay sane. You want to write testing to help debug your tools? You can build it. I finally realized that I could just engineer the ♥♥♥♥ out of everything here to make ever increasing money. You can build tools to solve the hacking problems presented just about any way you like. It took me a while to discover that the expectation was that I would be building software to whatever spec I could imagine. The code is on github and the docs are better than some actual API docs in the "real world", which is amazing. It is free online as well, which is where I sank all my hours (the stream version is basically the same, but at the time I was playing the online version has a more vscode like editor) As a professional software engineer, this is the closest this to real programming game out there. The fact that it is free is an act of charity by the developer.

I think this might be the best hacking game available.
